NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 PM CST Thu Feb 03 2022
...Widespread heavy wintry precipitation continues from parts of
the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys into the interior Northeast as a
frigid air mass continues to spread southward...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
for south-central Texas, the southern Plains, the lower and middle
Mississippi Valley, as well as much of the Ohio Valley and
Northeast.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect near portions of the Mississippi
and Ohio Rivers, from eastern Arkansas and northwestern
Mississippi, to far southeastern Missouri and western Tennessee,
to far southern Illinois and Indiana, as well as much of western
Kentucky and southern Ohio.
Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories are in effect for portions of
the Northern and Central Plains and Upper Midwest.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 PM CST...A slow-moving cold front stretches from northern
New England southwestward towards the Lower Great Lakes and into
the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, and Lower Mississippi Valley
and into the Gulf of Mexico. Several areas of low-pressure were
located along the frontal boundary, the deepest of which being
analyzed in north Alabama with a central pressure of 1010 mb or
29.83 inches of mercury. A warm/stationary front was analzyed
ahead of the main frontal boundary, stretching from Georgia north
into the Mid-Atlantic. National Weather Service Doppler Radar
indicated widespread precipitation occurring along and behind this
boundary from northern New England southwest through the Ohio and
Mississippi River Valleys and into the Southern Plains. Surface
observations indicated that temperatures dropped behind the
boundary leading to a precipitation transition from rain near the
boundary, to a mix of freezing rain and sleet just north and west
of the boundary, and eventually to snow farther northwest of the
boundary. In addition to the wintry precipitation, a cold Canadian
air mass continued to spread southward behind the boundary across
the Plains and Midwest, with temperatures below 0F in the
north-central U.S., and even into the negative teens in North
Dakota and northern Minnesota.

The threat for additional wintry impacts across the southern
Plains and mid/lower Mississippi Valley has begun to wind down as
the frontal boundary continues to slowly move eastward. Lingering
snow showers are possible through the overnight hours. Further
east, moderate snowfall is expected to continue through Thursday
evening and Friday morning across much of the Ohio Valley and
Northeast, before tapering off from west to east. Additional
snowfall accumulations of 12-18 inches are possible in interior
portions of the Northeast where mixing does not occur, with lesser
amounts to the south and west. South of the snow axis, a swath of
impactful and potentially damaging freezing rain will continue
overnight in the Ohio Valley and Lower Great Lakes, before
spreading further eastward into the Northeast towards the early
Friday morning hours. Ice accretions of over 0.1 inches and
locally exceeding 0.25 inches is possible through Pennsylvania,
norhthern New Jersey, southern New York and portions of southern
New England.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
