Storm Summary Message
Storm Summary Number 5 for Major Rockies, Great Plains,
Mississippi/Ohio Valleys and Northeast Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Fri Feb 04 2022
...Widespread heavy wintry precipitation gradually shifting focus
across the interior Northeast behind a sharp front...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
from the Ohio Valley through much of the northeastern U.S.
Wind Chill Advisories and some Wind Chill Warnings, Hard Freeze
and Freeze Warnings are in effect for portions of the central and
southern Plains.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 900 AM EST...A sharp cold front with multiple low pressure
waves stretches across the interior section of the East Coast and
down into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. A main low pressure center
with central pressure of about 1008 mb or 29.77 inches of mercury
is beginning to consolidate just south of New York City. National
Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated widespread precipitation
occurring ahead of and well behind the front. Rain, moderate at
times, was falling across the interior section of the East Coast
up into southern New England near the frontal boundary.
Meanwhile, much colder air behind the front is changing the plain
rain to sleet and freezing rain farther inland. Snow was falling
well inland across much of northern New England and into the lower
Great Lakes with the back edge of the snow moving into the Ohio
Valley.

As the low pressure center south of New York City is forecast to
further consolidate and then track east-northeast quickly toward
the Canadian Maritimes by this evening, the threat of wintry
weather across the northeastern U.S. will come to an end by
Saturday morning. In the mean time, sharply colder air is
expected to change the rain across southern New England and the
interior northern Mid-Atlantic to a period of sleet and freezing
rain today before possibly ending as some snow flakes tonight.
Farther inland, remaining snowfall accumulations are expected to
range from a couple of inches across the interior Northeast to a
little over 6 inches across eastern Maine. Ice accretion of a
quarter of an inch is possible from interior southern New York
through interior southern New England.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
