Storm Summary Number 03 for Northern Rockies to Upper Midwest
Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Tue Feb 22 2022

...Moderate to heavy snowfall and mixed precipitation to fall
across portions of the Upper Midwest today before the winter
weather threat wanes tomorrow...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of southeast
North Dakota and Central Minnesota.

Blizzard Warnings are in effect for portions of northeastern South
Dakota and southeastern North Dakota.

Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for central Lower Michigan.

Winter Weather Advisories extend across the Northern Plains,
Central Plains, Upper Midwest, and into Central Lower Michigan.

Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories are in effect for the Northern
Rockies, Central, and Northern Plains.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 900 AM EST...High pressure continued to build in across the
Northern Tier on the heels of an expansive frontal system analyzed
from the Northeast through the Midwest, and into the Great Basin.
Doppler RADAR and satellite observations highlight an extensive
cloud and precipitation shield over much of the North-Central U.S.
associated with the system as moisture-laden Gulf of Mexico air
overruns the frontal boundary in the Midwest. Most notably,
snowbands producing moderate snow were observed over the Northern
Plains and Uppper Midwest, with mixed precipitation noted over
portions of of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. On the
warm side of the front, a squall line was detected racing eastward
across the Tennessee Valley. Moreover, strong high pressure behind
the low was contributing to gusty winds across much of the Central
U.S.

Additional moderate to heavy snow is forecast today on the
northwest side of the frontal system as it gradually lifts
northeastward. By tomorrow morning, snow coverage is expected to
wane as the low pulls into northern New England and high pressure
migrates overhead. The heaviest accumulations is expected over
portions of east-central Minnesota into northern Wisconsin and the
Upper Peninsula, where additional snowfall of 6" + is likely and
isolated totals up to a foot are possible. While the heaviest
snows should fall to the east over Minnesota, winds gusting to 40
mph with 2-3 inches of additional snowfall will contribute to
blizzard conditions over portions of the Dakotas within the
Blizzard Warning. South of the highest snow totals, freezing rain
is forecast as warm air aloft continues to stream northward with
the warm front over the Midwest and Upper Great Lakes. Ice
accumulations of 0.01" + are possible from southern Wisconsin
through central Michigan, with totals greater than 0.10" forecast
over portions of central Lower Michigan under the Ice Storm
Warning.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
