Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from the southern Rockies and
southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic and New England.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect from Central Texas to the western
Carolinas.
Extreme Cold Watches and Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories are
in effect for portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley, Ohio
Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southeast, and New England.

At 200 AM CST...A wave of low pressure was strengthening along a
surface frontal boundary draped along the Gulf Coast. This system
was directing anomalous moisture into the south-central and
eastern United States while Arctic air pushed in from the north.
National Weather Service Doppler radar showed widespread wintry
precipitation stretching from the southern Plains to the Great
Lakes and Mid-Atlantic. On the northern side of the system, heavy
snow was falling from the central Plains to the Ohio Valley and
Mid-Atlantic. On the southern side of the system, sleet and
freezing rain were falling from the southern Plains to the
southern Mid-Atlantic. Observations indicated temperatures in the
single digits and teens from the southern Plains to the
Mid-Atlantic.

This major winter storm is forecast to bring widespread snow,
sleet, and freezing rain to areas from the south-central U.S. to
the Northeast through Monday. Heavy snow is forecast across a
large area from the Southern Rockies and Plains through the
Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Maximum snowfall totals are
likely to exceed 1 ft in these regions. South of the heaviest
snow, a stripe of significant sleet accumulation of 1-3+ inches is
likely. The snow and sleet will create widespread travel
disruptions, some of which could last for several days. Widespread
freezing rain is expected south of the primary snow axis,
affecting parts of the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley,
Tennessee Valley, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic. Long-duration power
outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or
impassable travel conditions are likely. Catastrophic impacts,
some of which may last for a week, are expected where freezing
rain amounts exceed one-half inch, with locally over one inch of
ice accumulation possible in parts of northern Louisiana, central
and northern Mississippi, southern Tennessee, and the southern
Appalachians. In wake of the storm, communities from the Southern
Plains to the Northeast will contend with bitterly cold
temperatures hampering clean-up processes, effectively prolonging
infrastructure impacts and hazardous travel through at least early
next week.
