Mid-Atlantic, and moving into the Northeast, while sleet and
freezing rain are still impacting portions of the Mid-South and
the Carolina Piedmont...
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the Southern Plains into
Texas, the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, the Mid-Atlantic, and the
Northeast.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect from Central Texas to the western
Carolinas.
Extreme Cold Watches and Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories are
in effect for portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley, Ohio
Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southeast, and New England.

At 800 AM CST...A wave of low pressure, 1005 mb (29.68 in Hg) is
located along a conjunction of a cold front sweeping through the
central Gulf Coast this morning and a stationary boundary south of
an Arctic air mass courtesy of cold air damming. National Weather
Service Doppler radar shows moderate to heavy mixed precipitation
across the South, a snow and sleet mix across the Carolinas, and
bands of heavy snowfall ongoing on the northern side of the system
for the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and increasing across the
Northeast. Surface observations show temperatures across much of
the South remain below freezing, except for a small warm sector
along and near the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida
Panhandle. Arctic air in the teens and single digits is occurring
across central Texas, the Midwest, and along the east coast from
the Carolinas to New England.

This major winter storm is bringing widespread snow, sleet, and
freezing rain to areas from the south-central U.S. to the
Northeast today into Monday. Heavy snow will continue to fall
across a large area from the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, and
into the Northeast. Maximum snowfall totals are likely to exceed 1
ft in these regions. South of the heaviest snow, a stripe of
significant sleet accumulation of 1-3+ inches is likely. The snow
and sleet will create widespread travel disruptions, some of which
could last for several days. Widespread freezing rain is expected
south of the primary snow axis, affecting parts of the Southern
Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southeast, and
Mid-Atlantic. Long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage,
and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions are
likely. Catastrophic impacts, some of which may last for a week,
are expected where freezing rain amounts exceed one-half inch,
with locally over one inch of ice accumulation possible in parts
of northern Louisiana, central and northern Mississippi, southern
Tennessee, and the southern Appalachians. In wake of the storm,
communities from the Southern Plains to the Northeast will contend
with bitterly cold temperatures hampering clean-up processes,
effectively prolonging infrastructure impacts and hazardous travel
through at least early next week.
