Closed Low Off Pacific Northwest Coast

A very deep 500 hPa low off the Pacific Northwest coast provided divergence aloft and strong jet dynamics to produce a heavy snowfall event over Oregon and Washington west of the Cascades. 10 inches of snow fell at Portland, Oregon with this feature. At 850 hPa, the coldest temperature anomalies were noted over the Pacific beneath the closed low at 500 hPa. This would suggest strong frontogentic forcing being established along the Washington Oregon coast.
