During the Summer of 1988, both the southwest high and the Bermuda high were positioned over the CONUS. This scenario led to widespread heat and drought over much of the U.S. Notice how the 850 hPa temperatures indicated a higher number of standard devaitions above climatology than the 500 hPa height fields.
