Hurricane Able - August 28 - September 2, 1952

A tropical wave moved offshore Africa on August 18.  A tropical depression organized out of the system, which subsequently
strengthened into a tropical storm on the 24th, then a hurricane as it passed north of the Lesser Antilles.  Able passed north of
the Greater Antilles and Bahamas, turning northward offshore northeast Florida due to an approaching upper level trough and
surface cold front before it struck South Carolina as a category 2 hurricane.  The system weakened back into a tropical storm,
then tropical depression as it moved through the Eastern United States, clearing New England on September 2nd.  Data for the
rainfall graphics below was provided by the National Climatic Data Center in Ashveille, North Carolina.
