Subtropical Storm Alpha -
May 23-29,
1972
Originating within a large upper level low on May 23rd, the system
moved northeast to offshore Cape
Hatteras before a high pressure ridge to its north blocked northward
movement. As the system moved
southwest, a small intense low pressure area developed, acquiring winds
of gale force on the 25th. The
very small center moved inland south of Brunswick, Georgia with
sustained winds of 50 mph. Thereafter
the system weakened and dropped southward into the Gulf of Mexico
before dissipating on the 29th. The
graphics below show the
storm total rainfall for Alpha, using data provided by the National
Climatic Data
Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
