On October 3, a tropical wave emerged offshore western Africa. On the 4th, a large area of low pressure formed near the feature south of Cabo Verde. Moving west-northwest, the system acquired a well-defined circulation with convection and became a tropical storm on the 7th. Vertical wind shear kept Jerry from becoming a hurricane, and the storm brushed by the Leeward Islands while recurving. After peaking in intensity on the 8th, Jerry moved generally northward and experienced a sheared environment, become elongated on the 11th when it dissipated as a tropical cyclone.
