...EXCESSIVE RAINFALL EVENT CONTINUES ALONG THE CENTRAL GULF
COAST...  

FLOOD AND FLASH FLOOD WATCHES AND WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR AREAS
FROM SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA TO NORTHERN FLORIDA.

AT 300 PM CDT...AN UPPER-LEVEL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WAS CENTERED
ACROSS THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY. THE WEAKENED REMAINS OF
A WEST TO EAST ORIENTED STATIONARY FRONTAL BOUNDARY REMAINED
DRAPED ALONG THE GULF COAST REGION. ABUNDANT MOISTURE WAS
STREAMING NORTHWARD FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO THE GULF COAST
STATES. AS THE MOISTURE INTERACTS WITH THE REMAINS OF THIS FRONTAL
BOUNDARY...WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO
DEVELOP...WITH LOCALLY VERY HEAVY RAINFALL. NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE RADARS AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATED AN AREA OF
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EXTENDING FROM NEAR NEW ORLEANS EASTWARD
INTO NORTHERN FLORIDA...AND NORTHEASTWARD INTO ALABAMA...CENTRAL
GEORGIA...AND CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA. HEAVY RAIN WAS REPORTED IN
SEVERAL LOCATIONS. DUE TO THE TROPICAL AIR MASS IN PLACE ACROSS
THE REGION...VERY INTENSE RAINFALL RATES OF A FEW INCHES PER HOUR
HAVE OCCASIONALLY OCCURRED WITH THE HEAVIEST SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. IN THE PAST 24 HOURS...INCREDIBLE RAINFALL RATES AS
HIGH AS 5 INCHES PER HOUR HAVE OCCURRED IN THE WESTERN FLORIDA
PANHANDLE. A COCORAHS OBSERVER NEAR WEST PENSACOLA REPORTED A
24-HOUR RAINFALL TOTAL THIS MORNING OF 21.7 INCHES.
ADDITIONALLY...THE PENSACOLA AIRPORT MEASURED THEIR SECOND HIGHEST
DAILY RAINFALL IN RECORDED HISTORY OF 13.13 INCHES ON SATURDAY.
SIGNIFICANT FLOODING HAS BEEN REPORTED IN AREAS OF SOUTHERN
ALABMAMA AND THE WESTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE...PROMPTING ROAD
CLOSURES....BOAT RESCUES...AND SOME EVACUATIONS.

OVER THE NEXT 48 HOURS AS THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW CURRENTLY OVER THE
MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY BEGINS TO MOVE NORTHEASTWARD AND A COLD
FRONT APPROACHES FROM THE WEST. THE COLD FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE
THROUGH THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. ON WEDNESDAY...WHICH WILL FINALLY
USHER SOME DRIER AIR INTO THE REGION...BRINGING AN END TO
WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS BY THURSDAY. AN ADDITIONAL 2
TO 4 INCHES OF RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS MUCH OF THE
SOUTHEASTERN U.S. THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. LOCALLY HIGHER
AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 5 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE...RESULTING IN THE
POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL FLOODING.
