Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 204 AM EDT Tue Oct 27 2020 Valid 12Z Fri Oct 30 2020 - 12Z Tue Nov 03 2020 ...Wintry weather in New England Friday... ...Overview and Guidance Evaluation/Preferences... Troughing over the East will exit into the Atlantic as additional height falls slip across the High Plains into the Great Lakes by the end of the weekend, pushing through the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic next Monday. Upper ridging is forecast to move into the West this weekend and sink into the southern Plains early next week. The pattern will remain somewhat amplified but still progressive with little in the way of precipitation after Friday. Through the 12Z/18Z models and ensembles, a blend couched mostly with the ECMWF but with some support from the Canadian and GFS formed a good starting point. Increased ensemble weighting by next week at the expense of the Canadian as system timing uncertainty increased. ...Weather/Hazard Highlights... With the system just off the Mid-Atlantic Friday morning (containing Zeta's leftovers), precipitation will start to wind down over the Northeast in a marginally cold air mass. At least some accumulating snow is forecast over higher elevations of New York and New England on Friday from the Catskills through the southern Green/White mountains (with remaining uncertainty in northern precipitation extent). Some snow, a coating or more, is likely into the Berkshires/Worcester Hills as the precipitation diminishes. Thereafter, despite another front crossing the CONUS, available moisture will be nearly non-existent and precipitation will be about as sparse as it gets. Only southern Florida, near the stalled front, may get any appreciable rainfall Sun-Tue with light amounts through the Northeast. Temperatures 5-15 degrees below normal across the Southern Plains Friday will moderate through the weekend to near normal as ridging moves in. The Northeast/Mid-Atlantic will generally stay cool through the period in the wake of the lead system Friday and reinforced by a second front out of Canada Sunday. Parts of the Pacific Northwest, California and into the Great Basin will see temperatures around 5 to 15 degrees warmer than normal.
